Associate Safety Health Manager (ASHM)
ASHM Designation
Associate Safety and Health Manager (ASHM) designation is intended to recognize those individuals who possess some combination of formal training and experience listed below that prepares them for safety and health management responsibilities. The ASHM serves to let potential employers and current employers know that these individuals have been formally educated to address workplace safety and health issues or are ready to step into entry level positions in safety management.
Individuals who receive the ASHM designation have a period of six years to pass the CSHM examination. The ASHM designation will permanently expire six years after the date of issue or when replaced by the CSHM designation..
Education and Experience Requirements
Upon completion of the application package, approval by the review committee, and payment of the appropriate fees, candidates meeting the following criteria are eligible for the ASHM designation:
- A graduate from a Board approved college or university, accredited by a member organization of the Council on Higher Education Accreditation, in which the degree identifies the graduate as having earned a bachelor, master, or doctorate in safety, or
- A graduate with a bachelors degree from a college or university accredited by a member organization of the Council on Higher Education Accreditation plus three years of qualifying work experience, or
- A holder of an associate degree in safety and health or a related field plus seven years of qualifying work experience, or
- A holder of a safety certificate recognized by the ISHM Board plus nine years of qualifying work experience.
Board Approved Safety Degree
A Board approved safety degree that qualifies a candidate for the ASHM without additional experience must meet the following criteria:
- The degree must clearly identify safety in it's title and on the transcripts
- At the bachelor level the major must have a minimum of thirty-six semester hours of safety specific courses
- The degree (bachelor, master, or doctorate) must include a minimum of nine semester hours of management exclusive of the safety courses or management content incorporated within the safety courses
- Not more then one half of the safety courses within the degree may be taken on-line.
- Graduates of ISHM Board approved Safety and Health Degree programs may seek the ASHM designation, upon completion of their degree
NOTE: there is no examination requirement for the designation ASHM, as the designation is intended to recognize those who have had formal safety training or qualifying safety management experience that prepares them to take the CSHM examination.
