THE PASSING OF BOB LECLERG

I am a compulsive list maker. I keep a daily, weekly and monthly list of things to do and feel a measure of satisfaction when I complete an item and can put a check mark beside it. I made a point to call Bob about once a month to see how he was doing and get advice from him. He was diagnosed with lung cancer about three years ago and seemed to be doing okay. My latest notes included calling Bob to tell him that Charles Kelley had been elected to the ISHM Board of Directors.

This was the second time Charles had run for the Board and the first time, Bob told me he knew Charles and had spent some time with him in Weaverville, North Carolina. I put off calling Bob too long. One morning I came into the office and Annette was taking telephone messages. She said that Charles Ezell wanted me to call him and he had bad news to report. Bob had died Saturday, November 26.

I first met Bob in 1967 when we both worked for the Department of Interior. I worked as Bill Pope’s assistant in the Office of the Secretary and Bob worked as the first Safety Director for the Federal Water Pollution Control Administration, then a part of the Department of Interior and later to become part of EPA.

Bob was not only a professional friend of 40 years, but a close personal friend. I always admired the ability he had to create publications that looked to be prepared by a publishing firm. He paid careful attention to detail having prepared the first bylaws for NSMS. He served as Executive Director for NSMS for close to 16 years and as Managing Director for ISHM from its beginning in 1998 to 2002.

He will be missed.
