Message from the Chair
by Jan Rosenberg

I’m excited about moving from the Vice Chair to the Chair position. Eric Van Fleet has done a superb job leading us to this point. Both Eric and I had hoped that the change in Chair would occur with the Certified Safety and Health Manager (CSHM) being accredited, but this is not the case. Eric will continue to be the lead person working to see that the CSHM becomes accredited.

Accreditation is the most important thing that your Board can accomplish at this point to enhance the level of credibility for the CSHM. During the second weekend of February, I will be participating in a panel of ten CSHM’s who will set the standard (passing score) for the Certified Safety and Health Manager examination though the assistance of a consultant retained by the Board. As a result of initiating this process, the CSHM exam has been tweaked so that it now consists of 150 multiple choice questions with the extended answer portion of the exam having been eliminated. This is a vital step in achieving accreditation. Once we have completed this task we will be well on our way to resubmitting our accreditation application to NCCA.

We have a fantastic Board that is dedicated to seeing that the CSHM takes its place among the highly recognized certifications in the safety and health field. I have great expectations for the growth of the CSHM certification. The process of getting this off the ground has seemed agonizingly slow at times. I have a lot of time and personal capital invested in making this certification a staple of the safety and health profession and I plan on continuing to work hard to see that happen.

I look forward to the next two years as Chair being an exciting time for the recognition and growth of the CSHM. Our quarterly newsletters will be the primary method to communicate with our membership, but I will be happy to field any of your questions or concerns by e-mail at rosenberg.jan "at" dol.gov.

ISHM Board Meeting Highlights

The Board met September 20, 2005 in Orlando, Florida. Highlights of the meeting include:

  • Eric Van Fleet, Chair, provided an update on the status of accreditation and work to be performed by a consultant. (learn more about this in the “Message from the Chair” article)
  • Phil Mueller, Managing Director, discussed a former member who requested reinstatement after being inactive for a few years due to illness. Under these conditions, it was decided that the member could be reinstated as long as they paid their dues for the inactive period.
  • Tom Slavin gave a report on the ISHM participation at the ASSE Conference in New Orleans. Tom managed the booth with grateful assistance from Randy McBurnett. Dennis Kundert pitched in by setting up the booth and displaying our new graphics. The ISHM participation should be considered a successful venture. We will participate in 2006 conference in Seattle, Washington, June 11-14. Volunteers to assist in managing the booth would be welcome.
