FROM THE MANAGING DIRECTOR'S DESK

The Institute for Safety and Health Management was founded by the National Safety Management Society in 1998. For an extended period of time applicants were “grandfathered” as Certified Safety and Health Managers. In order to be “grandfathered” they had to meet the education and experience requirements as determined by the NSMS Board and Directors, as well as completing an application for membership in the National Safety Management Society.

ISHM was initially funded by NSMS, with a loan of $10,000, repaid by ISHM to NSMS over a two year period. At that time the NSMS bylaws identified ISHM as a division of their organization.

In 2002, the ISHM membership elected a Board of Directors. Prior to this election, the NSMS Board of Directors established policy for ISHM. Included in the established policy was the requirement that all certificate holders must also be NSMS members. These members were invoiced $80.00 annually, with $10.00 of the $80.00 applied to their CSHM and transferred to ISHM.

In April 2003, ISHM became incorporated in the State of Missouri. Several costly projects were undertaken to ensure the viability of the certification program. With legal assistance, we applied to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to register our logo, the Institute for Safety and Health Management, and the Certified Safety and Health Manager.

For several years, ISHM has been in the process of applying and reapplying for accreditation with the NCCA. This year alone we have paid consultants more than $7,000.00 to ensure that the resubmission in June will be approved by the NCCA. Upon approval, ISHM will be required to pay an annual fee of $3000.00 to remain in good standing.

A budget was submitted to the Board of Directors for 2006. It reported an estimated $16,000 deficit without additional income. Most expenses are fixed, but there is some flexibility. We chose not to participate in the upcoming ASSE Conference in Seattle, but will be at the NSC conference in San Diego. This will save about $3000.00.

We need to increase income and the Board determined that the CSHM renewal fee will increase to $100.00. This is the only fee increase approved. Application fees remain $75.00 and the exam fee is still $150.00. Also, the ASHM renewal fee remains at $70. The fee of $100.00 is still much less expensive than most certification programs, and we hope all members choose to stay with us. Invoices will be mailed in late July, with payment due by September 30, 2006. Following our continuing efforts to save on expenses we will email invoices to those members who have an email address on file with us.
