Where We Stand with Accreditation:
December 15, 2004 the Board sent off to the National Association for Competency Assurance's National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) a 206 page report addressing accreditation issues for the CSHM. The materials were received ahead of the deadline, and the Board was informed that the materials would be distributed at the NCCA Board meeting March of 2005. Based on the distribution of the ISHM materials, ISHM should hear from NCCA no later than June where it stands in the accreditation of the CSHM.

It has been a long road getting to this point . . . and the Board would like to thank all those who supported this effort. Once we hear where we stand, final steps will be executed to accredit the CSHM. It is our hope that based on the materials provided that all we will have to do is pay the accreditation fees. In a worse case scenario, we may need to provide additional information to bring closure to the accreditation process. Be assured that the Board is committed to doing what is necessary to make accreditation happen.
What does it mean to have the program accredited? It means that there will be only two designations (CSP and CSHM) in the work world that meet rigorous standards, each validating the competency of safety professionals who hold those designations.
We are excited to be in this position and look forward to the challenges that accreditation offers the Board and its constituents.
It is our hope to offer the first accredited examination, at the June meeting of the American Society of Safety Engineers Conference in New Orleans.
The Board remains strongly committed to providing a certification process and distinction that all recipients can be proud of. To this end, we will continue to make important adjustments to the Institute and the CSHM that will strengthen the integrity of the Institute, its certifications, and its members. To the extent, we can serve our constituents, I strongly encourage you to support your Board and keep in touch. If you have questions, please feel free to contact me at, vanfleee "at" gvsu.edu.
On a side note, visit the ISHM website. We have the Continuance of Certification forms which you need to download and start filling out. Don't save this till the last minute . . . it is too much to try to remember.
