Fall 2005
Message from the Chair: Where We Stand
 |
Since our last board meeting (September 20, 2005) the following has happened. The Board has:
1. Hired a consultant by the name of Dr. Janice Scheuneman of Quality Assessment to guide the Board in the development of NCCA accreditation materials. This step is an important one because our first effort failed without receiving information on what was wrong with the first package. Our consultant has already informed us that the testing process and validation procedures need modification.
|
We should know by the end of November what we need to do to make the sections addressing testing fly with NCCA. Janice currently serves on the NCCA Board. Once we know what needs to be done, we may be calling upon our membership to assist us.
2. Committed to booth involvement in next year’s ASSE and NSC conventions.
3. Increased the number of Board Approved Academic Programs from one to three. We expect those numbers to increase over the next year.
4. Five individuals passed the CSHM examination.
5. Achieved “Title Protection” for the CSHM in the State of Nevada (thanks in part to the hard work of Jan Rosenberg).
The goal of the Institute (with the help of our consultant) is to be accredited by the end of the 2006. The major hurdle to that goal will be in the testing process. Although we do not need 500 individuals, I have been told by our consultant that we will have to have sufficient numbers (between 40 and 60 individuals) to conduct a Delphi study and a “set-score” study. To that end, again we may be calling upon or membership to assist in reaching those numbers. Once we know more, we will let you know.
Again I wish to confirm that the Board remains strongly committed to providing a certification process and distinction that all recipients can be proud of. To this end, we will continue to make important adjustments to the Institute and the CSHM that will strengthen the integrity of the Institute, its certifications, and its members. To the extent, we can serve our constituents, I strongly encourage you to support your Board and keep in touch. If you have questions, please feel free to contact me at, vanfleee "at" gvsu.edu.

ISHM Board Meeting Highlights
The Board met September 20, 2005 in Orlando, Florida. Highlights of the meeting include:
- Eric Van Fleet, Chair, provided an update on the status of accreditation and work to be performed by a consultant. (learn more about this in the “Message from the Chair” article)
- Phil Mueller, Managing Director, discussed a former member who requested reinstatement after being inactive for a few years due to illness. Under these conditions, it was decided that the member could be reinstated as long as they paid their dues for the inactive period.
- Tom Slavin gave a report on the ISHM participation at the ASSE Conference in New Orleans. Tom managed the booth with grateful assistance from Randy McBurnett. Dennis Kundert pitched in by setting up the booth and displaying our new graphics. The ISHM participation should be considered a successful venture. We will participate in 2006 conference in Seattle, Washington, June 11-14. Volunteers to assist in managing the booth would be welcome.
