ASHM Criteria for Certification

Upon completion of the application package, approval by the review committee, and payment of the appropriate fees, candidates meeting the following criteria are eligible for the ASHM designation:

Graduate from a Board approved degree program

Degree Accredited by a Member Organization of the Council on Higher Education Accreditation

ASHM Experience Requirement

Board Approved Doctorate in Safety

Eligible for the ASHM Designation

Board Approved Master's in Safety

Eligible for the ASHM Designation

Board Approved Bachelor's in Safety

Eligible for the ASHM Designation

Board Approved Associate in Safety

3 Years Qualifying Experience Required

College or University Graduate in a Safety Related Field

Degree Accredited by a Member Organization of the Council on Higher Education Accreditation

ASHM Experience Requirement

Doctorate in Safety Related Field

1 Year Qualifying Experience Required

Master's in Safety Related Field

1 Year Qualifying Experience Required

Bachelor's in Safety Related Field

2 Year Qualifying Experience Required

Associate in Safety Related Field

4 Years Qualifying Experience Required

College or University Graduate in Any Field

Degree Accredited by a Member Organization of the Council on Higher Education Accreditation

Graduate Safety Practitioner (GSP) or Associate Safety Professional (ASP) Designation from the Board of Certified Safety Professionals

1 Year Qualifying Experience Required

CHST, OHST, or CLCS Designation from the Council on Certification of Health, Environmental, and Safety Technologists (CCEHST)

7 Years Qualifying Experience Required

CAIH Designation from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene (ABIH)

7 Years Qualifying Experience Required

Safety Certificate Recognized by the ISHM Board

9 Years Qualifying Experience Required


Experience Requirements

  • Full time professional safety and health management experience acceptable to the Institute requires position duties with 50% or greater safety and health management related activities.
  • Two years of part time experience (25% or greater safety and health management related activities) may be substituted for one full time year.
